After weeks of not attending lectures, all 200 students in a lower division economics class began cramming for their UCD midterm this week and helped authorities determine that Professor Reece Eschen has been missing for at least four weeks.

“I haven’t gone to class since week one,” said Adam Friedman, a first-year econ major. “I was just planning on watching all 15 lecture videos the day before the exam.” Unfortunately for Friedman, and the entire class, those lecture videos were nowhere to be found. Professor Eschen wrote in the syllabus and announced during the introductory lecture that he planned to upload all lecture slides and use lecture capture to upload the video of each lecture to Canvas.

Since Professor Eschen is known to not attend class on exam days, the students were immensely unprepared and terrified when the TAs presented them with the ten-page exam. When asked why he never attended class, another student named Milton Marx replied: “I realized during week one that Professor Eschen was really chill, and the class seemed easy, so I decided to just not worry about it. I guess that was a bad idea.”

Professor Eschen is unmarried, and despite his stature within the economics department, he’s not terribly social with his colleagues, so it’s understandable why his absence could go undetected for so long. As one fellow economics professor Will Fare said, “He’s the type of person who, when he leaves, it feels like he never left, because when he’s around, it’s like he isn’t there.”

Despite his propensity for flying under the radar, Professor Eschen is known for having a sly, sharp, and cynical sense of humor, which has caused some people to speculate that this whole episode may have been premeditated. In the class of 200 students, 15 managed to pass the exam, while one student, Karl Keynes, mysteriously aced it. It’s unclear whether these students simply read the actual book like people did in the old days, or if something else was going on.

Some people have suggested the possibility that Professor Eschen secretly fed the lecture slides and videos to Keynes in order to teach the class a lesson about free riding, scarcity, and black markets. It’s quite possible that the other students who passed the exam actually paid Keynes large sums in order to have access to this low supply, excludable good.

If this was the case, then bravo Professor Eschen for teaching these lazy free riders a lesson about abusing the system! Though, his whereabouts are still unknown.

The midterm exam will cover material from Chapters 1-6 (maybe 1-7?) andAppendices A, B, and F of The Blue Planet as well as the lecturenotes from Lectures 1-12.

This practice exam is probably similar to the real exam, but of course notidentical. I have indicated the correct answers for the practice exam withbold face. I have also listed where in the lecture notes and textbookyou can find more about the questions.

One studying approach which will probably workreasonably well would be to read the book using the relevant lecture notesas a guide to what is most important. However, keep in mind thatanything in the lecture notes or book may be on the exam. Also note thatI was not involved in writing either the practice or real midterm and thatI have not seen the actual exam.

When a bottle of soda is opened bubbles form because the pressure inside the bottle has dropped, allowing gas to come out of solution. Gas dissolved in an upward-moving magma also comes out of solution and forms bubbles as the pressure on the magma drops.
