Converts an inputdate to the corresponding datetimeoffset value in the target time zone. When inputdate is provided without offset information, the function applies the offset of the time zone assuming that inputdate is in the target time zone. If inputdate is provided as a datetimeoffset value, then AT TIME ZONE clause converts it into the target time zone using the time zone conversion rules.

AT TIME ZONE implementation relies on a Windows mechanism to convert datetime values across time zones.

  1. The letter also refers to the 'zone description' of zero hours, which has been used since 1920 (see time zone history). Since the NATO phonetic alphabet word for Z is 'Zulu', UTC is sometimes known as 'Zulu time'. This is especially true in aviation, where 'Zulu' is the universal standard.
  2. Exact time now, time zone, time difference, sunrise/sunset time and key facts for Zulu Time.
  3. UTC = Coordinated Universal Time, or Zulu PST = Pacific Standard Time (UTC - 8 hours) ALDT = Alaskan Daylight Time (UTC - 8 hours) PDT = Pacific Daylight Time (UTC - 7 hours) MST = Mountain Standard Time (UTC - 7 hours) MDT = Mountain Daylight Time (UTC - 6 hours) CST = Central Standard Time (UTC - 6 hours) CDT = Central Daylight Time (UTC - 5 hours) EST = Eastern Standard Time (UTC - 5 hours).
  4. Zulu Time is the time in the Zero Meridian Time Zone, also called the UTC (Universal) time zone, or GMT (Greenwich Mean Time Zone). It is most commonly used in aviation and the military, as a way to sync up operations and reduce confusion when plannign of operations spanning multiple time zones.

YEach is expressed as a certain number of hours 'ahead of UTC' or 'behind UTC'? (For example, UTC -5 is Eastern Standard Time.) The letter 'z' refers to the Greenwich time zone, which is zero hours (UTC + 0). Since the NATO phonetic alphabet ('Alpha' for A, 'Bravo' for B, 'Charlie' for C.) word for z is Zulu, we also call it 'Zulu Time.'

Is an expression that can be resolved to a smalldatetime, datetime, datetime2, or datetimeoffset value.

timezoneName of the destination time zone. SQL Server relies on time zones that are stored in the Windows Registry. Time zones installed on the computer are stored in the following registry hive: KEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionTime Zones. A list of installed time zones is also exposed through the sys.time_zone_info (Transact-SQL) view.

Return Types

Zulu World Time Zone

Returns the data type of datetimeoffset.

Return Value

The datetimeoffset value in the target time zone.

AT TIME ZONE applies specific rules for converting input values in smalldatetime, datetime, and datetime2 data types that fall into an interval affected by a DST change:

  • When the clock's set ahead, there's a gap in local time equal to the duration of the clock adjustment. This duration is usually 1 hour, but it can be 30 or 45 minutes, depending on time zone. Points in time that are in this gap are converted with the offset after DST change.

  • When the clock is set back, then 2 hours of local time are overlapped onto one hour. In that case, points in time that belong to the overlapped interval are presented with the offset before the clock change:

Since some information (such as timezone rules) is maintained outside of SQL Server and are subject to occasional change, the AT TIME ZONE function is classed as nondeterministic.

A. Add target time zone offset to datetime without offset information

Use AT TIME ZONE to add offset based on time zone rules when you know that the original datetime values are provided in the same time zone:

Zulu To Eastern Time Zone

B. Convert values between different time zones

The following example converts values between different time zones. The inputdate values are datetime and are not stored with an offset, but are known to be Pacific Standard Time. The first step is to assign the known offset and then convert to the new time zone:

C. Query Temporal Tables using a specific time zone

What Is The Zulu Time

The following example selects data from a temporal table using Pacific Standard Time.
